Pilot Program, July 2017
After a rigorous application and interview process, we selected twelve students representing schools across the Philadelphia region (Southwark Elementary, People for People Charter, Albert M. Greenfield Elementary, Ardmore Ave. Elementary, Wissahickon Charter, and George A. McCall Schools) to participate in our first ever GRIT_PHL Mentorship Program. Our program emphasized exposing girls to various career paths in tech, building confidence and a sense of identity, and developing technical skills. Students attended the weeklong program held every day from 3:00–6:00PM at Philadelphia tech agency, Tonic Design Co. The program consisted of the following: (July 31–August 4, 2017)
Monday–Thursday workshops developed and taught by our GRIT_PHL team of volunteers (consisting of professional women from Tonic Design Co.) and covered Strategy, Project Management, Design, Development, and Quality Assurance
Students gained experience in the design process by constructing vision boards defining who they are and creating their own personal brand
Using their vision boards as inspiration, students developed personal websites after learning fundamentals of CSS and HTML
On the last day, students brought their families to reveal their vision boards and personal websites and participated in Machine Learning and Virtual Reality stations
